Here’s adding to the name game: a new piece called “Sam Brodsky.”

Sam and I went to school together. He plays in a lot of bands. Go Sam!

This is a new piano piece called, “Kyle Gann.” Kyle was my composition teacher at Bard College. This piece is not a traditional homage but rather, a piece based on my former teacher.

Here’s to Kyle.

I am starting to realize how ugly it gets when so much of your favorite music was recorded/composed by someone younger than you.

That young, punk don’t stay around forever (inside of us), and I don’t love many rock legends in their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s… 60’s.

Maybe Prince/David Bowie/Frank Zappa/Danzig/Lennon/McCartney dried up because they outgrew the music they loved most. That’s sad.

Basic rules: Stop at red. Go on green. But to translate these rules into a virtual environment. To have to try to persuade someone to pause at a sidewalk.

Game’s are similar to a musical composition. Things are constantly being repeated. A propulsive structure: a structure the mind can follow and find a logic for following. The motif is shooting. The composition moves forward, the world is changing around me, and I got my reasons for going there.

A video game acquires its own world of time. There’s Doom: subtly unceasing, every step truly a step forward in the scheme of slaughter. Doom’s game play is with a death pact with pacing. Slow down, and the drama falls apart.

The parallel advance in technology and creative structure is the spirit of the times. The parallel advance in video game technology and the conceptional framework that creates them is the spirit of the times.

Dear friends, family, and colleagues,

I am writing today to ask for your help. I have been working on a new opera, “Tydrus the Twit,” for the past year, and after months of planning, we are starting our fund raising campaign. We are 13 musicians, actors, and artists eager to perform this exciting new opera, and with your help, we will be able to perform “Tydrus the Twit” at the Bushwick Project for the Arts in late November and Early December. Please see the link below:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/zekevirant/experimental-opera-tydrus-the-twit

We need your help to make this project happen. We are trying to raise $2000 to cover rehearsal space, set design, costumes, and promotional expenses. This is an all or nothing affair. Either we get $2000 in donations, or we get nothing.

Please support new music and drama. Every single dollar is madly appreciated, and of course, we are giving away gifts for your generosity. For $25, you will receive two tickets to the show, a digital copy of Zeke Virant’s new album “Tydrus,” and a digital copy of the script for “Tydrus the Twit.” For $100, you will receive all of that, a personal thank you letter, a handmade copy of my new album, “Tydrus” and also, I will send you a candy bar of your choice, everyday for a week. For a full list of gifts, please visit our Kickstarter web page, http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/zekevirant/experimental-opera-tydrus-the-twit

Please support new artistic endeavors and forward this e-mail to your friends, our friends, our family, and help us reach our goal. I appreciate all of the support and encouragement you all have given me over the years, and I hopefully I will be able to see you all at the show.

All my love and all my best,

Zeke

The newness (and refinement) of game design is at the heart of every videogame blockbuster.

The infancy of games

Older game designs, like puzzle games and racing games, are being implemented into increasingly complex game constructions. These games within the game play various roles in the player’s experience. For example, a puzzle can be implemented so as to give personality to a character or an environment: your character visits a gypsy village, and an old woman challenges you to solve a puzzle. Mechanics from racing games are utilized in every Grand Theft Auto game as the central means of exploring the game’s environment. As more game designs are developed, varied means of

The actor plays a role. The actor follows the rules and then plays the game. The discovery process for an actor is internal: realization through repetition. It is finding the essence of the action and seeing the self through many different perspectives.

The interactor discovers a role. The interactor learns the rules by playing a game. The discovery process is external: realization of one’s surroundings through exploration. Revelation through time. Function in relation to capability.
